Stick it to the Man

Tuesday, April 27, 2010

A dispatch from one rager during last week’s Little 5 celebrations:
“They’re nice guys, they’re very nice guys. They’re just trying to help us out,” Kaelan said of the officers.
The crowd clapped.
“I am a little upset that we can’t get to the polka dot bikini girl contest, but can you come back for [...]

See if you can find the typographic error in this Indiana Daily Student review of Joanna Newsom’s recent show in Bloomington (click here for larger version):

2009 Wrap #14: Sarah Wyatt Swanson

Wednesday, December 30, 2009

As a preface and caveat I would like to admit that I missed a lot of Bloomington shows in 2009. I’ve picked five of the most awesome shows I did attend to write about here.

Beach House at the John Waldron Arts Center: I expected to be wowed at this show since Beach House would be [...]

2009 Wrap #12: Heath Byers

Tuesday, December 29, 2009

First, live:  I see a lot of shows. Its really hard to choose.  In roughly chronological order…
Gentleman Jesse + Paul Collins Beat @ Bear’s Place (Jan 2009) There was a snowstorm. It was midweek. But a small crowd came out and  was completely floored by this amazing performance from a legend and  the winner of [...]

Tune-Yards Bird-Brains Come for the amazing syncopated percussion and jangling ukulele, stay for the double-tracked yodeling!  From the first track, I knew that not only was I going to really like and jam on this album all year, but that it was going to be a critically important piece of work to me as a [...]

New Digs, 2009 Version

Tuesday, November 3, 2009

Feed readers, huh? They’ve changed my entire world, too (my world of fast, backlit reading). But there comes a time when you’re scrolling through your 1000+ links and wonder: Hey. What does marathonpacks.com actually look like? You know, in real/virtual html-coursing-through-the-tubes life.
Come by the house for a bit. I’ve remodeled! [...]

Who Needs Blogs, Anyway.

Bathroom graffiti, Laughing Planet-style. For non-Bloomingtonians, Laughing Planet is our local “hipster” (sic) burrito place, with a crew of tattooed, fixed-gear bike riders serving food with all-organic, all-local ingredients. It’s really great stuff, actually (I recommend the Cuban–mmmm…plantains), but it comes, on occasion, with a healthy side of antagonistic anti-free-market ideology.
The above exchange [...]

Wilco Contest Results!

Wednesday, April 15, 2009

Here are my three favorite entries for the Wilco ticket contest I offered up last week. All three are very good (two are from Ghost ! All song titles have four syllables!), but “Pieholden Suite” nudged just a bit ahead of the pack. Thanks to everyone! Now, then:

“Pieholden Suite” / Sheila [...]

HWGM, redux (and in town)

Wednesday, March 11, 2009

Luke Temple’s voice sure sounds like Paul Simon’s on a few of his tracks as Here We Go Magic, but this ain’t no Kodachrome. I wrote a bit more about the new album here, and if I were to craft a more direct metaphor to a form of media it resembles, or to the [...]
