Dead Zone Boys

Wednesday, December 2, 2009

My last Grampall Jookabox Pitchfork review, of Ropechain, led to an interesting rebuttal from the label.  Not sure if AK’s got another Bill Veeck-esque gimmick in the hopper this time around, but my take on the new one, Dead Zone Boys, is up today.  The record is a big improvement on Ropechain, though the B-movie spook-fest schtick is a particular aesthetic I can’t see him sticking with for much longer, lest it get stale very very quickly.  But Adamson makes it work here, from within the confines of what it is he does.

The thing about Adamson is that he’s got a well of talent and an array of intriguing influences, but still can’t figure out a way to shape them into something more than than the playfulness of some horny, goofy stoner galoot.  I sincerely hope he puts out something totally awesome, though, and maybe if he continues honing his chops with concept-driven works like this, it’ll come sooner than later.  Here’s where to buy it.

And yes, I brought up Sammy Terry in the review, and yes he scared the holy living hell out of me as a kid (despite the “Samuel Terry: Ghoul” lower-third graphic).  See why:
