Huh. Crazy.

I have no idea how my Fork Friend Ian Cohen dug this up (see cap below), but huh: wow. If you don’t recognize that guy’s name or face, he’s in this band, and also just released this album, which is also very fine. Because the Onion more or less made up this particular corner of satiric history as they went along, I’ve always marveled at this sort of journalistic sketch, where 90% of the humor comes from the mundanity of the details (and granted, many times the punchline is the headline, but that’s beside the point). I also basically assumed that everything was completely made up, or at least imaginatively composited from writers’ memories. But here, with the name and all, right? What if most of this was true, or at least sort of true? How many of the thousands of characters in Onion articles of this ilk have also been “real” (ish) (if this one actually is, which: maybe! Scroll to the very bottom of this interview, and it appears that he’s bros with an Onion guy). How incredibly cool would it be to be one of these characters? Do they have to sign confidentiality agreements, like reality-show contestants? Is it worth it to try and figure out who Area Bassist is?
