well, i'm glad i clicked through from that elbo.ws post wherein i wasn't quite sure if you were mocking me or lauding my choice of Yo La Tengo as indie rock guitar solo gods. :)

yes, a thousand times yes, to this idea here. how indeed to quantify "giving a shit" about music? and this is what's on my mind daily as i write over at LSB and why i sexualize most of what i write about music, because that's the way that i "give a shit" about it as a non-musician, (to generalize) and that's the way many non-musicians "give a shit" about music, i think. of course that's an overgeneralization, a way of saying that we appreciate music in a bodily fashion or for purposes collectively represented as sexually or physically stimulating. or more simply put, we like to fucking dance, or simply fuck to music.

but, honestly, what escapes discussion in music geek circles where everyone is showing off their esoteric knowledge of the obscure is admitting that what often forms our immediate attraction to music is it's physical affect on us.

so how will that continue to be commodified in light of new technology and how can we measure that effectively? or could we? and no, the web doesn't make this way of relating to music any more difficult, in fact, i'd argue it facilitates it as it allows further anonymity and therefore more sexual expression. my own identity as case in point ;)

why didn't i ever roam over here before, love what you've got going on, xoxo

I think the "not giving a shit" is simply what happens when music loses "value" as a commodity...kind of like the Deutsch Mark in post WWI Germany. Download-stuffed mp3 players and hard drives remind me of the wheelbarrows of cash that had been rendered practically worthless in an environment of extreme inflation, and that's kind of how I view the music landscape these days.

I knew that history degree would come in handy.
