Dino Jr. in the Studio
Thursday, February 26, 2009
Man, this clip of Dinosaur Jr.– in the studio recording their Jagjaguwar debut– crams a TON of stuff into a brief time. We learn that Lou regrets making a “hellish stink” about getting kicked out of the band forever ago (Lou, feeling guilt? NOOOO), we get to see a quick CU of three Big Muffs side by side, which…80s. “Tarpit” is in there, as is nascent jam “I Don’t Wanna Go There,” which if there were ever a stereotypical Dino Jr. song title, there you go. We hear a lot from mixer John Agnello, who gives us a brief tour of J’s penchant for vintage gear (a “vintage API monitor section”, and a nearly 50-year old thing apparantly just for his vocals). Agnello even drops a Web Sheriff reference in there! I do remember Fat Possum raising a hell of a stink about Beyond a few years back, now that I think about it.

Best of all, we learn that mixing the record, the sonic baseline is the Black Crowes’ Amorica (seriously, you guys); they actually have a lot of good things to say about the way that record sounds. So you know, this guy can take a bow, at least until a reunited Husker Du says they want their album mixed to sound like Semisonic or whoever. And I can’t stop typing before hipping you to the one total jam from Amorica. That clip is apparently from VHS, so you can’t really hear the intricacies of the knob-work, but c’mon, you can find that CD in any used bin in America right now.
But that’s not even the best news of the day (for Bloomington people, that is)! They’re also coming to Bloomington, to play the Bluebird, on April 10!

I am way too excited for this band to come to Jagjaguwar. That label is on fire right now and signing Dinosaur Jr. is just another tip to anyone who is not paying attention yet.
