Thanks for embedding such a thoughtful review of this year's music in general within the Wale piece. Easily the best write-up on an album I've ever read here, and one of the best anywhere else.

Hip hop was certainly weak this year with some notable exceptions (Wale, Food for Animals, The Cool Kids, Cadence Weapon, and T.I. were the best I heard). But weaker even was this year's country (again, some exceptions: Drive-By Truckers, Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson, Kathleen Edwards, Justin Townes Earle, Tift Merritt, and yes, Taylor Swift). Rock seemed to rule in '08, and not just the indie- kind, but the "fuck yes" kind. Deerhunter, No Age, Constantines, Jay Reatard, Titus Andronicus, Gentleman Jesse, Times New Viking, Fuck Buttons, Eddy Current Supression Ring, Marnie Stern, Nick Cave, The Hold Steady...I could go on. Hell, even R.E.M. came back blazing with "Living Well is the Best Revenge."

I have a somewhat silly question to ask that you probably won't be able to answer: Of all the above names, why are the only ones that weren't reviewed by Pitchfork in the country category? To review every genre equally would be admittedly impossible (although efforts to beef up hip hop reviews were made circa 03/04, and there's been a recent trend towards metal). But why the neglect of one of America's oldest genres? At least review the fucking Bloodshot albums! Why not bring an expert on board and ask them to focus solely on this terribly underdeveloped aspect of the site?

Best,

adam

although this post is an embarrassment of riches, your mixtape about nothing and microcastle writeups are the best i've read of either album, the latter probably 100 times moreso than any other review i've read this year. great work.
