Women "Group Transport Hall" (Live at Cake Shop)
Tuesday, January 20, 2009
Until they release something new, or play live where I can see them, I’m going to keep posting videos like this of Women. This is a version of “Group Transport Hall” that slows the song down significantly from the recorded version–like playing a 45 at 33 speed–resulting in a nice quasi drone-metal buildup that really climaxes in the chorus (the vocals on the verse actually sort of sound sort of llike Jim Morrison). The main thing I regretted about “Hall” on the LP was that, while it was technically the best moment on the album, it was also a brief 1:15; like the sun temporarily coming out from behind a cloud before disappearing again, or cracking open the curtains after a 3-day smack binge to realize that, whoa, it’s spring.
(Also, man: I’ve never been there, but Cake Shop looks like a fucking hole.)

What’s wrong with a fucking hole? This town could use more fucking holes, less bullshit polish.
Though I wish it were a fucking hole with better sightlines.
(I walked out of this very show, I think.)
dude. yes. i was actually at that show (and as someone from california, it was my first time at the cake shop) and i cannot agree with you more on the following things:
1. that version of group transport hall was so good live.
2. the cake shop is a fucking hole. so goddamn warm in there and it slants downhill to the stage.
i thought that “shaking hand” was the best technical moment on the album, with its ridiculous guitar work and that awesome coda at the end, but i think “group transport hall” is the best pop moment on the album (yes, even moreso than “black rice”), and those harmonies are great, live and on the record.
also cake shop looks like a hole, but that’s why it’s one of my favorite venues in america.
