Shows and Links Update

I’ve done a bit of remodeling. A slight bit, and it was actually done a few weeks ago. So. I’ve moved all the links to other worthy sites to its own separate page, whittled it down a bit and added some new pals. There’s also an ever-growing section at the bottom for Indianapolis/Bloomington-related folks. Any local people I’m missing (I’m sure there are plenty)? Hit me up.
On the link tip, I need to point your ears toward the best mp3-centric blog to come around since Destination: Out emerged a couple years ago. It’s called Musicophilia, and it’s a very carefully-curated series of amazing mixes. Now, by “mixes,” I don’t mean the minor things I put up here now and again to organize my thoughts of what I like during a particular year/half-year. I mean exquisitely-crafted entities, always based around a theme, which both introduce me to legions of artists I’ve never encountered and unsettle my expectations about what a “mix” of music actually entails. Consider “Sensory Replication No. 3 – ‘Collide\Coalesce’ (1950-2004)“:
The aim is to create something akin to a 3D sound environment, something like a binaural recording, wherein a stereo signal is perceived with full spacial depth. Of course, this isn’t really possible–but I’d like to hope that if one listens to as many elements as carefully arranged as this, it becomes something close to multi-sensory immersion, hence the ‘Sensory Replication Series’.

Second, I’ve re-established something else that used to reside on the sidebar before my recent html feng shui. For those in the Indy/Bloomington areas, another separate page with forthcoming shows of note. Not absolutely everything, mind you, but those that for whatever reason I find especially interesting. Wednesday night, for instance: power-pop traditionalism comes to Bear’s Place in the form of Gentleman Jesse and Paul Collins (yes, that Paul Collins). I’ll be there.
There’s a good chance I’ll show up at a few of the shows coming through in February, as well: weirdo folkies Larkin Grimm and Chris Barth (of the Impossible Shapes) at Bear’s on the 11th, the Watson Twins at the Bus-Chum on the same night as Mahjonng at the Cinemat (the 20th)–not exactly Sophie’s Choice for that evening’s entertainment, I’d suspect (I’m opting for the latter). John Macaulay’s alt-country collective Deer Tick is at the Cinemat the next night, and then (thanks to Spirit of ‘68), fucking Dead Prez at the Buskirk-Chumley on the 25th. Not too bad. I’ll have more to say about Here We Go Magic at a slightly later date (spoiler alert: thumbs-up) but that back-to-back with Bonnie on March 11/12 promises to be pretty great.

You’re making me blush, sir. Partly because you’re so kind–and partly because reading that particular quote is a little embarrassing–I swear to your readers, I’m not usually trying to be so high-concept as that! Seriously though, I’m really glad the irresponsible amount of time I spend tweaking the little details of some of these mixes turns into something you enjoy. It’s great to know I am succeeding in helping people scratch the sound-itch (for me, a lot of the music I feature almost literally hits me that way–I literally love how it feels in my ears). Thanks again!
