The Shaggy Defense and Some Other Stuff

This promises to be good:

As R. Kelly’s child pornography trial is about to start, the judge’s media liaison gathers all of the reporters together to announce that we’ll be watching a sex tape in open court. He then delivers stern advice about doodling. “I am here to warn you,” says Terry Sullivan, “that anyone who draws a depiction or a simulation can be committing the act of child pornography. … You don’t want to be doing that.” Since I have the artistic skills of someone with no hands, this isn’t much of a setback. The courtroom sketch artists, naturally, are more concerned. One of them asks if she can avoid prosecution by doing something “free form.” I have no idea what she’s contemplating, but I hope she remembered to pack a urine-colored pencil.

Housekeeping: for local (Bloomington) people, I’ve removed the extensive venue list from the sidebar and replaced it with a few links to cover those bases, Dan Coleman’s Spirit of ‘68 Productions being the main destination for the happeningest shows in the Bloomington area. It’s slow going right now because it’s summer, but rest assured there’s plenty of forthcoming goodness to forth come.

Housekeeping 2: I’ve also added a bunch of links on the side to some academic folks doing some great bloggish stuff. Henry Jenkins is the go-to-guy on fandom, and he recently featured this piece, a great one written by one of his Master’s students, on coming to terms with music that typically fall well outside his tastes. “Bitch-Ass Darius,” to be specific.

Kansas U’s Nancy Baym does some really great stuff with online fandom, and her blog of the same name is one-stop-shopping for more nuanced critiques of the stuff you get from Coolfer, BoingBoing, and Hypebot. On this page, she offers some freebies; if you check out the very first .pdf there, be sure to fast-forward to page 14 (woot!). She’s a big R.E.M. fan, but has spent more time recently on Swedish-music blogs, which certainly makes perfect sense at this point.

Housekeeping 3: If you’re so inclined, be sure to subscribe using the new feed icon at the right, or by clicking here. I’m getting ready (and I don’t issue idle threats) to do away with the old one, I swear.
