Is My Viciousness Losing Ground

Monday, May 19, 2008

Hi. Let’s catch up more thoroughly when there aren’t so many other people around; for now, a dog’s breakfast of what’s been going on recently, more or less (Ed: less).

I liked Funplex for what it was, but I like the idea that the B52s are still around and releasing good music even more. If you’ve not listened to the first album, or if you don’t own it, this is a situation that needs to be rectified. First thing you will learn: large portions of that album are fucking dark, especially if all you know is “Roam” and “Love Shack.” “Planet Claire” could be a Clinic song!

I liked this a lot more.

In order for Trent Reznor and Radiohead to become the Curt Floods of the post-p2p major label era, there are going to have to be some other bands who do what they did without the benefit of making their initial footprints through the much mass-er media of the pre-Web (read: not niche) era.

Also:

This book not only tells the story of the birth of Nine Inch Nails, but also gives voice to a peculiarly American subculture that – especially since the Columbine shootings – has been widely vilified: Mall Goths, of whom Trent Reznor is undoubtedly the patron saint.”

Also:

“we hate the music business, even though we probably wouldn’t have known who our patron saint Trent Reznor was without it”

This movie looks a lot like this movie, which to me equals this. Doesn’t hurt that it’s directed by the guy who gave us this and this, too. The “Brought to You By David Fincher and Spike Jonze” credit at the start, while not a feint, is still a little too paternal for me. But holy hell just look at that trailer. Stunning. Apparently it’s all for reals, too:

Then he went to work on the fantasy sequences, saving time and money by piggybacking on his commercial assignments. “I shot first in India, then in Namibia. The crew got smaller and smaller. I would only do adverts in areas where I wanted to shoot: China, Argentina, Bali.”

(…)

Mr. Jonze added: “Had a studio done what he did, it would have been an $80 million movie. But he’s so experienced at it and knows people in all these countries and knows how to shoot with a tiny crew. That’s how he got away with it. But still, he spent his own money, which is insane.”

SF/J writing on “lazer bass.” We, listening to “lazer bass.”

I probably should just let this speak for itself, I guess. And I should probably speak less about such things, as well.

The sun on the horizon makes you wonder, Is it rising or setting? And is it our sun or a weird invader sun? The five rays coming out of the sun symbolize the five times that I have had sex.”

Oh, and there’s a muxtape over on the right, because I’m not made of stone. I’m hoping to update it (and this) with some measure of regularity. There’s really not too much rhyme or reason to that one (okay, maybe some), but there might be more in the future. Hopefully in the next few days I’ll have a mix or two posted here, with stuff I like from the 2008s.

I thought this was interesting, but I’m not quite sure why. I’m sure there’s something to be done with the data, but I’m not quite sure what. Does the peak c.1992 have to do with artists settling into the groove occasioned by the CD’s 72-minute capacity, and taking advantage of the available space?
