Cyann and Ben "Let it Play"

With "Let It Play" (mp3), Cyann & Ben have alchemized a glorious hybrid of edgy psychedelia, towering space rock and cinematic thundercore. The song is deceptively glimmering, but hides a furious center. It progresses like a rainstorm across the desert---you can see it coming (the pealing sound of the opening guitar serves as a warning), and it's gonna be a big one, but you stand still, just waiting for the torrent to hit you, because it's going to feel fucking great when it does. The song title itself gives you all the instruction you'll need, really. And then everything gets quiet for a minute, a pause that allows the tension to accumulate, and then it revs up once more, gaining enough traction to spiral screaming toward its conclusion.
