Brazilian Girls "Jique"

Thursday, August 10, 2006

Man, you can just throw any noise or rhythm in the world at Sabina Sciubba and not get her to budge from what seems like her intended mission since birth or something. “Jique” (mp3) goes through more variations on more themes over the course of 4 minutes than some groups do over entire albums, but throughout, Sciubba retains her restraint, as if the music were just being projected unheard behind her on a screen while she performed. The song pulsates and sizzles and crackles and screams with the urgency of a super-hip war zone, but Scuibba has her eyes set on someone in particular—who exactly that might be it’s sort of hard to narrow down because she keeps drifting between languages like a cute diplomat after a few cocktails. And what passes for a chorus in this song is also what sells it as some high-level super-dramatic parallel-universe James Bond shit, where all pretense toward coyness and anything approaching demure gets backed, finally, by something approaching fabulous.

Talk to La Bomb doesn’t come out until September 12, but you can pre-order it here. Brazilian Girls’ website.

NOW, FOR THE BUSINESS AT HAND: From tonight through the wee hours of Sunday morning, I’ll be here, there and everywhere at Indianapolis’s annual mini-SxSW known as the Midwest Music Summit. And if you’re anywhere within like a hundred miles of the city and reading this, I don’t know what else you’d be doing with your time. For the purposes of this thing, though, I’m aiming to provide as thorough a recap of my experiences as I can, the day after these experience take place. I don’t intend to, because I don’t want to, provide anything like “press coverage” (stop laughing), because I want to have fun and, ideally get drunk and hang with my people, which is what this thing is all about. Click here for my updated list of the bands I plan on seeing, though I know it will change pretty drastically as the festival progresses and my pockets fill with swag and I try to remember…um…I forget. And find me if you’re there. I guarantee to be taller than 99% of everyone.
