The Sky Drops "Hang On" & Saturna "Chasing the Unpredictable"

This past week, I’ve received two EPs that made me unearth my Treasure and Isn’t Anything and Psychocandy and Nowhere. I’m calling conspiracy. Seriously, this sort of stuff just doesn’t happen. Evidence:
The Sky Drops is composed of guitarist/songwriter Rob Montejo and last year’s minor Internet wonder Monika Bullette on drums and vocals. Bullette’s 2005 solo debut, which showcased her strong singerly/songwriterly instincts, was distributed by SVC Records (related in no small part to this blog). On the band’s debut EP-ender and highlight “Hang On” (mp3), she provides delicate harmonic assistance (dig the second verse) to Montejo’s languid, Shieldsian chivalry. The sentiment here is simple (”hang on, we’re not on this earth too long”), and the song ends before you’re able to grab hold of it. So listen again.
The Sky Drops’ debut EP is called Clouds of People and is available here.
Portland’s Saturna isn’t quite as slick and urbane as their EP’s cover photo would have you believe. That would be quite a task. Okay, they’re slick. And pretty urbane, too. And they pile the drama higher than that skyscraper. But when, on EP-ender and reluctant pounder (again with the last song!) “Chasing the Unpredictable” (mp3) they echo the holy hell out of the vocals and guitars, and use that one bass they have with rubber bands instead of bass strings, well, I’m not made of stone here, folks. It’s Jesus and Mary Chain for the late-night after-hours set.
Buy All Night from CD Baby here.

Two good ones for sure. Montejo’s Smashing Orange “1991″ is a lost shoegaze classic. And that Saturna is the bomb, excellente!
Hang on link doen’t work…
