Midwest Music Summit 2006

August is rapidly approaching, and for those of us in Indiana, that means the return of the three-day Midwest Music Summit. And while this year's lineup isn't as totally amazing as it has been in years past (one Cat Power performance in particular comes to mind), there are plenty of reasons to shell out 20 bucks for a three-day pass. It leans pretty heavily toward the indie rock, but that's cool, because there are still like several hundred sets going on from Thursday to Saturday within a few miles of each other (most within walking distance from one another in the Broad Ripple area on Indy's near-north side), and Dr. Octagon is playing, which promises to be interesting. And Friday night at Locals Only is pretty much a who's who of Indy indie rock, that you really shouldn't miss. After a quick pass through the lineup, these are the sets I plan on hitting, with Indy bands asterisked. Take a look at MMS's full lineup and tell me what I'm missing. I'll keep updating this thing. If you really feel like taking in the whole deal, I'll be on an industry-ish panel (interestingly titled "Web Blog Promotions: New Media Isn't So New Anymore") discussing blogging and how awesome it is with a mess of other bloggers, moderated (to the extent that anything he does is moderate) by the ever-irascible Dodge, and taking place on Saturday morning.

that friday locals only caused me to have a flashback to the early '90s when you could see the datura seeds, antenna and the boatmen with great regularity. sounds like a great time...

if you can catch them, you may want to squeeze in The Motion Sick from Boston, MA. I've not yet seen them, but I've heard really good things...

Peter Adams from Cincinnati, OH creates simple, but truly beautiful music that is a mix of The Beatles and The Flaming Lips. His songwriting makes you think, and allows you the freedom to interprete it any way you'd like. His debut album, The Spiral Eyes is quickly spreading throughout the Mid-East, and sure to become a Top 10 favorite.

He will be playing at Birdy's - August 12 - 10:00

The Ironics from Fargo, North Dakota are playing at Birdy's 8:15. They are a new band that is getting popular in Fargo and Minneapolis. My new personal myspace favorite band.
