Village People & Average Homeboy

Wednesday, April 19, 2006

If you’ve ever been to a large sporting event, it’s abundantly clear that the Village People’s “YMCA” and “Macho Man” managed to slide under the cultural gaydar. Well, there’s no way this one’s going to slip by unnoticed at halftime. Witness the majesty that is the Village People’s “Sex Over the Phone”, from 1985:

Like “YMCA”, “SOtP” comes across as more of an advertisement for a service than a song on its own terms—both pitch an interactive respite for lonely gay males, freely available for those willing to take advantage of the oppportunity. It’s so fulfilling, and they’re always willing!

And for those who enjoy the Rockwell-esque song itself, here’s mp3. Limited time only!
And I couldn’t resist posting another one I completely hijacked from the always amazing Banana Nutrament. Our man has a bit of a problem finding the beat, but then again, he’s just an “Average Homeboy”:

Keep in mind that during this manifesto, we’re implored to take into consideration that, in opposition to typical rappers, our singer is not on crack, nor does he live in a box. He is, however, fighting for his “equal rights”, which apparently extend to the wearing of Zubaz. We may be victims of some viral-ness, as Nutrament Mike warns, but if so, it’s never been done better. And, now that I think about it, I do have a strange desire to purchase some Vuarnet.

Yet again, here’s hissy mp3. If anyone has the ability to de-hiss, I’ll gladly repost a remastered version.
