There’s A Bit More to Worry About There
Wednesday, April 12, 2006
This has made the rounds for a couple weeks now, but it’s finally up on the blogger’s friend, Youtube. Seriously, someone needs to pry me apart from that thing. As for the original news package, to the viewer in the other room it would have been nothing more than standard FOX fare–the network has more or less made its reputation on going after child molesters and serial rapists/killers. And, really…thank goodness someone finally is. They’ve been getting a free pass from society for way too long. But bless the Swiftian satire of the Daily Show, which really has nothing to do here but play the clip, point, and laugh:
The dire tone established by FOX’s sound effects, police-tape graphic, and mannequin-like over-earnest anchor-chick is subsequently undermined by the fact that, well, they’re parading less-than-scantily clad women on half the screen while they’re talking about a killer of women on the loose on the other half. There’s so much to be said about the utter ineptitude of the live producer for this segment—”Get me some racy Daytona Beach b-roll, like yesterday! There’s a rapist down there, and we have to save lives, people!” And then subsequently undermining their overly obvious attempt to curry favor with the basest instincts of the viewing public, by, at the very least, distracting the distracted with pictures of boobies, and to those somewhat savvy with the ways of television news production, exposing their overarching desire to just fill the fucking screen with moving pictures.
