Aloha “Summer Lawn”

Thursday, March 16, 2006

I’m not leaving, nor is anyone else, until someone tells me who gave Aloha permission to present, within the boundaries of one song called “Summer Lawn” (mp3), an organ lick that’s straight-up pulled from Emerson, Lake and Palmer–not necessarily the debut, but definitely Tarkus, and combine it with lyrics that appear to have emanated from the pen of one Mr. Ben Gibbard? No one seems to want to step forward, so I’ll continue with an example. We hear the lines “Watch your body rise and fall/respiring the sadness into distance/’Till the day is gone/You’re leaving it all/In a dream you won’t recall” over top of the aforementioned organ, which is now sounding a bit more like “Chest Fever”, or maybe Sugarloaf’s “Bach Door Man”. No one’s heard of Sugarloaf? No “Green-Eyed Lady”? Well, that’s beside the point, because now I’m thinking more the Lemon Pipers’ “Green Tambourine”, which no one can convince me is not a complete and total jam. No one’s leaving until I get an answer, regardless.

Some Echoes is out 4/11 on PolyVinyl.
