Liars “Let’s Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack”

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

If it’s possible that James Murphy’s conceptual ode to the roots of avant-dance spurred listener interest in the likes of ESG, Suicide and Brian Eno, perhaps there’s an outside chance that Liars‘ new full-length Drum’s Not Dead will lead to a newfound appreciation for the towering, pre-industrial dissonance of Public Image, Ltd, The Pop Group, This Heat and Glenn Branca/Sonic Youth. It’s “gallery-punk” at it’s most listenable, and “Let’s Not Wrestle Mt. Heart Attack” is a polyrhythmic buzzsaw with Angus McAndrew’s wail hovering over the clangor–activated, of course, by a Bill Rieflin approach to drumming and an overwhelming sense of arty dread.
