Andrew Thompson “Don’t Get Down”
Thursday, January 12, 2006
Andrew Thompson’s recorded output (that I’ve heard) alternates between two types of songs. The first type fits with his visual image, and are comprised of goofy Harry Nilsson-style one-liners, like “Cockadoodledoo”, that robot song, or the irresistable “There Must Be Some Kind of Misunderstanding”, the video for which is available here. Thompson’s other songs are naively inspirational little gems, made believeable by his formally trained (Berklee) blue-eyed soul voice, which reminds me of a young Felix Cavaliere (Young Rascals). In a song like “Don’t Get Down” (mp3), the plastic production values lend an element of unsophisticated authenticity to the line “Try not to feel sad”, which, sung in a gentle, pleading manner, renders me unable to, well, feel sad.
Thompson’s first album, Egad! is out of print, but you can grab two more songs here.

About that second article… Everyone who appreciates and cares about music knows that crappy feeling when they hear their favorite band that they’ve been obsessing over and thought belonged to them, blasting from the car of a teenie bopper in a VW. You feel like you’ve earned it, like you’re in on something, like you’re elite. ooops.
That article is obnoxious because Horning feels like he’s privelaged and more worthy of this music. Sure, people who collect music just because they can don’t appreciate it suck. But that doesn’t mean you can pretend you’re better or more worthy of it. It’s rock ‘n’ roll for crying out loud. So what if someone has a copy of the Beach Boys’ Smile demos and doesn’t get it the way I do… that sucks for them.
Horning is just an arrogant geek–the worst kind of geek.
excellent on Don’t Get Down.. perfect timing to help cure my messed up state of mind…
