The M’s “Shaunee Dupree”

Friday, December 9, 2005

On their forthcoming record (and Polyvinyl debut) Future Women, The M’s mine the same 60’s territory as Kurt Heasley did with the Lilys a few years back on Better Can’t Make Your Life Better. This is most evident on “Shaunee Dupree” (mp3), which is very reminiscent of The Lilys’ “A Nanny in Manhattan.” And that’s a good thing. The album recalls early Nineties Flaming Lips here and Centro-Matic there to complement the obvious Kinks and T. Rex moments, but the band manages to completely, and fantastically, transcend any strict comparisons. The songs are all blessed with strong R&B-based rhythms, thanks to drummer Steve Versaw, and great little string arrangements, like the one at at the end of “Trucker Speed”. They’re in the middle of a Monday night residency at Chicago’s stellar venue Schuba’s, no doubt preparing for an extended Future Women-supporting tour.

Polyvinyl will release Future Women on February 21. Dig some past music at The M’s website.
