Residing somewhere in the same area code as the neo-druidic revelry of Animal Collective, the cold squawk of Frog Eyes, Asylum Street Spankers' homegrown hootenanny and those old chestnuts Waits and Beefheart is Philly-based Man Man. Their 2004 debut The Man in a Blue Turban With a Face both bemused and irritated listeners, drawing in those eager for some anachronistic circus atmospherics and driving away those looking for, well, anything but. The group's new release, Six Demon Bag, offers much of the same delightful mysterious whimsy, barked forth as if needing to recruit listeners from the far countryside. The music is once more magnificent, again lifting its instrumentation from the display of an ethnomusicology museum, but employing it in service of some great melodies--"Black Mission Goggles" (mp3) being the highlight. The marvelous percussion is what grabbed me, but Man Man drops the kitchen sink on this track.
Six Demon Bag drops Feburary 21, 2006 on Ace Fu. Also, dig "10lb. Moustache" (mp3) from Turban, courtesy of Ace Fu.
hey, thanks for the man man track. i've been pumping van helsing boombox non-stop for a while now so it's good to switch it up. where did you get the field music album?
nice choice, i dropped "van helsing's boombox" the day before P*fork on my blog and Honus from Man Man dropped a little message in the comment section. you may wanna check it out. www.myselfmyself.com

All I know is you used the word "hootenanny" in a post. That rules.
...and one of these days, "cockamamie".
