Monthly Archives: December 2005

…and I’m off.

Wednesday, December 28, 2005

For a few eagerly anticipated days of rest and relaxation with my girlfriend, who I haven’t been able to see nearly often enough lately. And away from the laptop, about which I feel the exact opposite. Chicago’s the place, which brings up a lingering issue. I’ve received more e-mails about one particular song than any [...]

marathonpacks’ year-end mixes, vols. 1&2

Monday, December 26, 2005

Two things I really like about the end of the year–making comprehensive mixes of the music of the last 12 months, and giving cheap presents. This is a way for me to do both. Well, here they are–the first two products of about two weeks (off and on, mind you) of narrowing my year-end favorites [...]

Happy Holidays from marathonpacks

Sunday, December 25, 2005

Since I’m a godless heathen, I’m going with a distinctly anti-FOX “holiday” theme. I’ll be back on Monday and Tuesday with 4 podcasts of my favorite music from 2005. Thanks for reading, and have a great whatever-it-is-you-do.
Old 97s “Lonely Holiday“
Television Personalities “Psychedelic Holiday“
The Pixies “The Holiday Song” (live WERS studios 1987)
Frank Black and [...]

Site Issues

Wednesday, December 21, 2005

Two questions for visitors to marathonpacks…
How slowly does the site load?
and…
Does it work better with certain browsers?
I’ve noticed problems with Safari, but not many with Firefox. Any issues with Explorer, Netscape, Opera, etc.?
If you’d like, please leave comments. Thanks!
Update: I’ve tweaked a few things to try and improve the performance. Let [...]

The Temptations “The Little Drummer Boy”

Tuesday, December 20, 2005

If there’s ever been a style of pop music that lent itself to Christmas music, it’s got to be 60’s Motown. Maybe Phil Spector’s girl groups/wall of sound would be up there too, but for my sake, I’m going all Berry Gordy. Think about it: Motown’s assembly line style of music production cranked out hit [...]

Man Man “Black Mission Goggles”

Monday, December 19, 2005

Residing somewhere in the same area code as the neo-druidic revelry of Animal Collective, the cold squawk of Frog Eyes, Asylum Street Spankers’ homegrown hootenanny and those old chestnuts Waits and Beefheart is Philly-based Man Man. Their 2004 debut The Man in a Blue Turban With a Face both bemused and irritated listeners, drawing [...]

Monday Morning Music Videos

Monday, December 19, 2005

One of today’s videos you all have probably seen already, and the other may have completely missed the radar of those of you not inclined to seek it out. There are, however, some interesting similarities between the two, and while I plan comments in that direction, I’d like to know what you think of ‘em [...]

XTC “Thanks for Christmas”

Friday, December 16, 2005

Each year when driving to my mom’s house for Christmas, I force myself to get in the spirit by playing this song in my car. It always works.  Andy and Colin allow themselves to get caught up in the celebratory spirit–which is enough of a shock from these oft-curmudgeonly souls–but not enough to reduce the [...]

Fugu “Here Today”

Thursday, December 15, 2005

The music of artists like Fugu (Mehdi Zannad) problematize the ever-nebulous definition of “indie pop”. A strict interpretation of the term would seem to include him. He’s not connected with a multi-national promotion/distribution force and his music adheres to the time-tested structures of Western popular music. But a looser take on indie pop would exclude [...]
