The Vegetables “Dream 1″
Thursday, November 17, 2005
It’s easy to compare Bloomington’s The Vegetables to Olivia Tremor Control, and well, I will, if only for two reasons–the word “dream” in this song’s title (”Dream 1” [mp3]), and the droning freak-out at its conclusion. But they’re more than the sum of their recognizable musical counterparts (even though the intro guitar riff sounds like “Go Your Own Way” for like one second). They’re representative of the often-overlooked fact that myriad forms of psychedelia are alive and well in music today–and it doesn’t take a magnifying glass to find them. The Vegetables (who have adopted a few members of fellow Bloomingtonians and Jagjaguwar representees Odawas and are now called Julian of the Spirit) play psychedelic music that doesn’t presuppose large amounts of drugs ingested by their listeners. In other words, good music. Okay, one more musical reference–this song reminds me of Roxy Music’s “2HB.” There…I feel better now.
