The Shortwave Set “Is It Any Wonder?”

With all the current NME-fueled UK hype around Babyshambles and the disappointing Arctic Monkeys, it’s sad that truly inventive, visionary artists like The Shortwave Set, and their debut album Debt Collection are overlooked. Their music is a well-organized rummage sale of antique brass and strings, high-pitched coos and harmonized vocals on a bed of post-Beta Band droning rhythms and spliced samples. It’s the best example of very modern British psychedelia, in the Sleepy Jackson vein. Really, though, it’s what Astralwerks should sound like. They’re touring the UK right now with Field Music…um…excuse me, I had to clean the drool off of my keyboard.
