Millbrook “Meet Me in the Fields”

“Meet Me in the Fields” (mp3) takes more creative (and amazingly unaffected) detours that anything I’ve heard since The Soft Bulletin. The first one comes only 8 seconds in, when the airy multitracked voices delicately punctuate the lead vocals–a nicely startling moment when I instantly knew I was going to like the rest of the song. And it’s great–that spiraling orchestral structure straight from the ELO loop catalogue elevates a deceptively simple melody to a level only imagined by similarly-minded groups. Millbrook is composed, Steely Dan-style, of the songwriting duo Daniel Jacob Horine and Steven Moser, who surround themselves with a crack group of session musicians. Their 5 track EP Cathedrals offers four other little pop gems–pick it up.
