The 88 “Nobody Cares”

Monday, November 7, 2005

Actually, a lot of people care about The 88–the LA-based power-poppers have garnered reviews in Rolling Stone, Spin, CMJ and many other national publications about their second album, Over and Over. It’s a solid, unassuming collection of little pop gems, similar to, although less quirky than, fellow City of Angels denizens The Sugarplastic, and a definite descendant of late 70s LA legends The Quick. Lead singer Keith Slettedahl’s voice reaches that Marc Bolan quaver like Supergrass’ Gaz Coombes, and the rhythm approaches Spoon’s poppiest moments, which is shorthand for Kinks, Kinks, Kinks. They’re soon to be featured on an episode of the O.C., so grab Over and Over before your 14 year old cousin does. Start with “Nobody Cares” (mp3).
