Sons and Daughters “Dance Me In”

Friday, October 21, 2005

Definitely bound for the top 17 (or maybe even 16!) of marathonpacks’ year-end list, Sons and Daughters‘ debut The Repulsion Box (on Domino Records, of Franz Ferdinand notoriety) is a tense, driving affair rife with a high, rough drama recalling the American Southwest like the Pixies through Surfer Rosa and Nick Cave. The band is from Glasgow, but you wouldn’t know it from listening to Adele Bethel’s powerful voice, which can conjure memories of Patti Smith and Debbie Harry at one point, then the sultry yelp of Neko Case at another. Song “Dance Me In” (mp3) is pure CBGB punk circa 1976, strongly resembling the Talking Heads’ “Thank You for Sending Me an Angel” fronted by the aforementioned goddess of Horses.

Bonus: Talking Heads “Thank You for Sending Me an Angel (1975 demo)” for comparison purposes.
