Mazarin “For Energy Infinite”

Saturday, October 29, 2005

Man, Philly has been responsible for three of marathonpacks‘ favorite singles this year–The Spinto Band’s “Oh Mandy,” CYHSY’s “Over and Over Again” and now Mazarin, with their irresistable “For Energy Infinite” (mp3), from We’re Already There. It’s this year’s version of 2004’s “Nowhere Again” from Secret Machines–all forward momentum, created mostly by that springlike, almost rocksteady guitar line that I can date back to “David Watts,” the one that essentially made Madness’ career. It breaks down mid-song, “Silver Rocket”-style, and then bursts back into one of the best singalongs of the year. The “I know, I know, I know” section can’t help but remind me of the poppiest moments from Wire’s Pink Flag–”Ex-Lion Tamer” and “Mannequin” especially. A great record–one of the best I’ve heard this year.
