Dälek “Ever Somber”
Tuesday, October 11, 2005
The lyric “Why divide God into three sections/Some find him uncut in a vial/No difference” from “Ever Somber” (mp3) is what got my attention, winding its way into my ear through what sounds like 200 feet of Kevin Shields’ finest feedback work. New Jersey’s Dälek (known to his mother as Will Brooks) is unique in hip-hop, possessing a firm grip on the avant-garde and imbuing it with a distinct new meaning through association with brooding beats and skillful scratching, courtesy of DJ Still (known to his landlord as Hsi-Chang Linaka). From Filthy Tongues of Gods and Griots got my attention back in 2002, but not enough to follow-up with a purchase. February’s release of Absence, however, did spur some cash outlay, and to good result. One of the most adventurous and rewarding hip-hop listens of the year.
