Tunng “Tale from Black”

Wednesday, September 28, 2005

Sam Genders (vocals) and Mike Lindsay (producer) form Tunng, whose debut full-length, Mother’s Daughter and Other Songs, compiles previous singles and new offerings onto one disc. Their sound, which draws immediate comparisons to the Beta Band due to Genders’ timbral association with Stephen Mason, relies heavily on rhythm and ambience, combining the electronic and acoustic (dare I say, “folktronic?) in innovative ways. Song “Tale from Black” (mp3) begins as a gently strummed folk number with Four Tet-ish backmasked electronic flourishes, and an unnerving lyrical presence: “She washes all the young blood from her hands.” Then, around the 2:50 mark, the drums come in and reform the song as an eyes-closed head-nodder, complete with a well-placed, equally eerie “who’s sorry now” vocal sample toward the end.
