The Sugarplastic "The Runaround"
Thursday, September 1, 2005
I discovered The Sugarplastic almost 10 years ago–I played Bang! The Earth is Round constantly– mostly repeating and adding to mixtapes the irresistably quirky “Don’t Sleep,” and never managing to tire of it. This was 1996, and the band seemed like they could be on the verge of enjoying a stint as the next great power pop band. Then, Geffen dropped them, and, well, their next album, Resin, was released four years later on the tiny Escape Artists label.
Their superb new album Will, however, has garnered them the distinction of “buzzed about band” again, and LA Weekly magazine has dubbed them “Best Pop/Rock Band of 2005,” for which they’ve apparently received a piece of transparent statuary.
The spectre of XTC still hangs over the band (which they readily admit), but they’re far from mimics, as fuzzed-out “The Runaround” (mp3) can attest.
Buy Will from Tallboy Records here.
