The Rosebuds “The Lovers’ Rights”

Wednesday, September 7, 2005

I’ve been eagerly anticipating the new Rosebuds‘ record for some time now, despite the fact, I’ve recently realized, that I only really like one song from debut Make Out. Opener “Back to Boston” was a gentle two-minute pop wonder with subtle synth washes, bah-bah-bah vocals, and an earnest, autumnal sentimentality missing from most current indie pop. It contained so much promise as to convince me that the band’s next album would contain more of the same, especially lead singer Ivan Howard’s voice, reminiscent in its best moments of a young Colin Blunstone.

I’m therefore heartened by the trio’s new record, Birds Make Good Neighbors, which, while not completely redefining the Rosebuds’ sound, sounds much more mature, and is a definite candidate for marathonpacks‘ inaugural indie pop record of the year. Dig “The Lovers’ Rights” (mp3).

Update: The Rosebuds are coming to Bloomington this Friday (9/9)!

Pre-order the new album at Merge here.
