Constantines “Thieves”
Thursday, September 15, 2005
The eagerly anticipated new Constantines record Tournament of Hearts marks another evolutionary leap for the band from the magnificent, regal Shine A Light and primal debut Constantines. The second record (which I view as near-perfect, and in my top 5 albums released since the turn of the millenium) reveled in the power of inspiration and release like no band since Rites of Spring, and Hearts expands on it, polarizing the extremes of their sound and taking pleasure in the whiplash created by their dynamic shifts. “Thieves” (mp3) is midnight urban rumination hinted at previously on “Insectivora”, but never explored in quite this manner. Singer Steve Lambke once again provides a perfect counter to primary lead singer Bry Webb’s guttural howl, residing in the upper register and subsumed to electric piano, dot-matrix printer drums and, eventually, marvelously, saxophone.
Tournament of Hearts comes out for Canucks on September 27, and us ugly Americans October 11th. Pre-order it here.
